Dental implants are a permanent solution for replacing missing or extracted teeth. Most people enjoy this treatment over alternatives (like dental bridges) because implants don’t require additional teeth to be altered for the replacement. We’re proud to offer this restorative treatment at our Atlanta, GA, practice!
Placing the Implant
A complete dental implant treatment may take several months. The first step of the process is installing the titanium screw into your jawbone. We do this by creating an incision in the gum and may also place multiple implants if necessary. The gums are then sutured after.
The Healing Process
Next, the implant site needs to heal for about three to six months. During this time, the post will go through a process called osseointegration, where it begins to fuse with the jawbone. You’ll wear a temporary crown during the healing process to protect the tooth and maintain functionality in your mouth.
Placing the Abutments
Finally, we’ll place the abutment on the implant, which serves as the base for your new tooth. We’ll then take an impression to create your permanent restoration. Some offices have an onsite lab to create the crown, but others send it to an outside lab. Once the repair is complete, you’re invited to return to the office so we can permanently attach the restoration.
Your smile will look as natural as ever! Once you’re used to the implant, they’ll start to feel like your real teeth. Common advantages of getting dental implants are:
- Permanent solution
- Prevents bone loss
- Keep adjacent teeth stable
- Reduces your risk of gum disease
